What is an LTO ?

LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a magnetic tape data storage technology developed in the late 1990s by IBM, HP, and Seagate to create an open standard and increase competition in the market. Its main format, LTO Ultrium, was designed for high capacity and became widely adopted. The first Ultrium cartridge, released in 2000, had a native capacity of 100 GB.

Although tape storage is often viewed as an outdated technology, it continues to be widely used. In fact, the release of LTO-10 was largely driven by the growing demand for high-capacity, cost-effective solutions to store the massive volumes of data generated by AI applications.1

With a shelf life of 30 years or more, LTO tapes are ideal for archival scenarios where data must be preserved for decades but accessed infrequently.

In comparison, when archiving data on hard disk drives, manufacturers typically recommend powering them on at least two to three times per year to maintain functionality and prevent potential issues from prolonged inactivity.
